Status plays a big part in our world. How important we are and what other people think means a lot to us. Even though we have no official class system, people are nevertheless very much separated into categories in the western world too. The airlines are a classic example of this. Every time that boarding commences for a flight there are certain passengers who get invited first. And not only are they allowed on board ahead of the waiting economy travellers, they get to walk past all of them on the way! I’ve heard economy passengers being sternly told off for making the mistake of boarding “before their time”. Even when all passengers are allowed to line up, there are separate lanes depending on your class of travel. The categories could not be more obvious.

The QF2 747 that lost nearly all electrical power a few years ago just happened to already be on its descent into Bangkok.

The QF32 A380 incident a year ago just happened to have 5 pilots on board for a 7 hour flight, including 3 experienced captains.
